We recently hosted a webinar titled "Digital Credentials & Higher Ed: Creating an Agile Workforce." The conversation was led by Brenda Perea, Director, Workforce Solutions at Credly, and Dr. Lisa Larson, President, Eastern Maine Community College. Dr. Larson's unique perspective on digital credentials creating pathways to workforce solutions spurred a lively conversation.

Q: How is badging different from competency-based education?
A: I approach digital badging from the perspective that it supports competency based education. A digital badge provides the means to support competency based education. The badges (microbadges) are defined by goals, standards or skills and includes the artifacts or evidence of mastery. Students engage in education, training, co-curricular or other activities that move them towards meeting the requirements within each microbadge. Faculty or trainers can then review the artifacts for mastery and award the microbadge.
Q: Are the credits earned via compiled badges at the community college level transferable to the university system?
A: We are articulation agreements with the University of system. If those courses/badges are connected to those articulation agreements, then yes, they would transfer. Additionally, the Maine Community College System and the University of Maine System are working on badges on 21st Century Workforce Skills and those will be recognized within both systems.
